For those clubs teaching children, how do you ensure your instructing staff are safe? Do you have a safeguarding policy which also covers safer recruitment of people teaching children. For example, does everyone have a DBS check, do you get references when you are using instructors, do you verify them?

Our organisation is regulated by the British aikido board.
They manage insurance, admin and also set required standards for teachers.
Regardless of whether you are teaching adults or children, you have to attend a 2 coaching course which involves passing and assessment. It also goes through what you should look for in health and safety etc. You also have to have at least a certificate of attendance for first aid.
In addition to this, if you are teaching children you need a dbs check done every 3 years and there are guidelines around what techniques should be avoided until a certain age.

Linda, sounds like your club is well set up to oversee this.
Being in the industry of safeguarding I know there are a number of very high profiled cases about to come out in the media in the coming months in children's coaching.
I guess the question to instructors is have you done enough to check your teaching staff to ensure they are safe. If not, then questions will be asked of you if there is a safeguarding concern in your club.
