Lua also known as Kapu Kuialua
The modern form has been clearly influenced by Jujitsu and Karate, the ancient form; it is believed, concentrated on the application of joint locks and breaks alongside strikes delivered with lethal force.
Ancient practitioners, before entering battle, were said to have shaved their hair and oiled their bodies making it difficult for opponents to grab them. This art form now is as much a martial art as a cultural legacy and has now started to make a comeback. Based on theories of duality similar to Daoism, warriors aim to combine the ethereal characteristics of Ku the demi god attributed to war and Hina, the goddess of the moon.
Aimed at emboldening themselves and intimidating their opponents, these dances of death instil important psychological components of battle into practitioners. The philosophical base upon which Lua is taught places particular emphasis on the responsibility of teachers to encourage positivity in all things.
Training emphasises the use of a number of body parts as offensive weapons alongside the usual elbow, palm, fingers, knees, hand and feet the forehead, shoulder, forearm and chest even the ground itself are utilized as offensive weapons.
Certainly the actions of stalking and pouncing were of vital importance in early Hawaii tribal culture and not alerting enemies to attacks drastically increased the chances of success and although modern Lua today has little use for such training, this art form, born from a tribal warrior culture, still incorporates a number of dirty fighting brutal techniques unusual in other arts such as the biting, poking, pushing and pulling techniques.
