    Capoeira Angola

Capoeira Angola is the oldest known form of Capoeira and it has a history of probably over 500 years. It can be characterised by its ritualised games
Mestre Pastinhaof Salvador, Bahia is often known as the father of Capoeira Angola although he is not the inventor, he is a character that worked hard to popularise the art overseas and many practitioners in the US and the UK can trace their lineage back to his system.

This is a common argument amongst martial artists and it really depends upon the practitioner; what is right for one is not necessarily right for another. Contemporanea practitioners may point out that one of the benefits of practicing their combined system is that because it does not just focus on speed, power and reflex (the main emphasis of Regional) but also does not overly focus on strategies and tactics like the Angola system, that they have the benefit of being able to employ both aspects of the two systems at will thus making them more rounded players and martial artists.

Slower rhythms are known as Angola and typically when the Angola rhythm is being employed musically in actions of the fighters may be less aggressive, slower, softer and more dance-like. When the rhythm or toques change, the pace of the fighting also changes to mimic the music. Jogo de dentro is a faster paced rhythm and when heard one can expect to see the players engaging with each other in a more exciting and fast-paced, aggressive style. Music is important in Portuguese, West African and Native American cultures and it makes perfect sense to include it in the practice of Capoeira.
The lyrics that may be heard in a Capoeira song are blues-like, in as much as they quite often tell stories to highlight or illustrate the feelings of the practitioners. They may also relate various stories and tell tales of pleasant or unpleasant events that have taken place in the lives of the singers. The Berimbau single stringed, primary instrument is usually made from Beriba wood which is a native Brazilian wood.

The calabash gourd is the resonator from which a steel wire taken often from a vehicle tyre canresonate with. This single stringed musical bow is recognised as one of the oldest instruments in the world and is common throughout many cultures. It creates different pitcheswhich the Capoeiraplayer can respond instinctively. It is not uncommon to also see use of the tambourine, the conga drum and a cowbell during Capoeirafights.
