Capoeira.
There are three mains forms of Capoeira; Capoeira Angola, Capoeira Regional and Capoeira Contemporanea. Although we can deduct much the oral tradition of Capoeira, written records of this art form only date back to 1770. At that time it was not identified or linked with African civilians but rather to the Portuguese bodyguard of the Viceroy.
In the early part of the 20thcentury Capoeira earned itself a bad name often employed by petty criminals and used in street crime. In contrast the oral tradition points to a much more colourful and interesting origin. It is now widely believed that Capoeira was brought to Brazil by the African slaves. Many of the movements, indeed, lend themselves to being used while in chains particularly some of the kicking methods and the head butting methods could easily be employed by men in chains in order to effect an escape.
