Liu He
By Chris Crudelli
Liu Hestyles are known as the six harmonies but were originally known by another title; water boxing, a reference to internal and flowing soft martial arts forms. This is thought to have originated in the Sungdynasty 960-1279. by Daoist sage called Chen Tuan.
Many martial artists claim that Liu He has similar moves to Xing Yi Quan and Bagua. This could be accredited to one of the well known teachers such as Master Wu Yi Hua who drew his group of students from a wide ranging martial arts background and encouraged them to incorporate their own methods of training into his art.
The system has several forms, which are performed with bare hand and weapons. One unique aspect to the art is that there are set methods within the syllabus of cultivating chi including standing meditation, sun meditation, pre-heaven meditation and pushing hands meditation and a further esoterically named primary definitive force chi gung.
By gaining an understanding of the six harmonies, masters are able to stand their ground and repel what seems to be a far greater force than they would ordinarily be able to do.
A rather spectacular example of this might be a well trained master taking up a stance and having a person or persons pushing against them and yet it seems the master is unmoveable.
But what is really happening is that the master has a physical understanding of the mechanics of the body and the physics of force that he has cultivated in his own body.
