    Go-Ti Boxing

    By Chris Crudelli

In about 2600 B.C. the style of fighting named Go-ti boxing came into its own, primarily a wrestling art, it also drew military hand-to-hand combat techniques from its predecessor, Chou-ti. Many think that Go-ti is a precursor to modern kung fu, however, what is now known as kung fu was originally developed as a method of training to keep the body, mind and spirit healthy. Modern kung fu can claim to have absorbed elements of Chou-ti and Go-ti along with philosophical components from Buddhism and Daoism. Little is known about the original form of Go-ti boxing but we do know it was popular with Daoist monks who fused it with their own style of martial arts and health cultivation techniques.

Interestingly, we can see in modern Daoist martial arts, such as Tai Chi, principles of leverage to unbalance an opponent and diverting force rather than blocking force, which have formed the large body of internal martial are likely to have evolved out of the original Go-ti principles of wrestling in which two opponents must use leverage and tend not to clash head on but, rather focus on unbalancing the opponent and using his force against him in order to win a confrontation.
