Northern Praying Mantis
By Chris Crudelli
Praying Mantis was founded by a Shaolin master named Wang Lang during the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Ching dynasty, combining the two elements of monkey footwork and praying mantis hand techniques, he developed and went on to popularise one of the most unique-looking and original systems of Chinese Kung Fu
Chiang drew from elements of Xing Yi and Dong Bei. Rather uniquely for the time Chiang threw away many of the old, complicated footwork forms which he did not believe to be the essence of generating power and he instead extended the traditional seven star forms into a set of six different forms containing a total of 360 different movements. In addition to these changes he also decided to place much more emphasis on the palm of the primary striking weapon as opposed to the traditional mantis hook hand.
